Commander Khalifa Hifter (also spelled Khalifa Haftar), backed by Russia, UAE, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and France, announced ceasefire. Khalifa Haftar said that he is ready to stop fighting and enter talks to end Libyan civil war. Khalifa Haftar and his forces are fighting with United Nations (UN) backed government in Libya’s capital Tripoli. Khalifa Haftar, who has positioned himself in eastern Libya, attacked Tripoli in April 2019. However, his campaign to capture Tripoli suffered a string of losses in recent days while fighting against Turkey. Intervention of Turkey has shifted the course of the Libyan conflict.
Libya has Africa’s largest oil reserves. After the killing of its longtime dictator, Colonel Muammar el-Gaddafi, Libya is continuously mired in chaos. Fighting between the different factions in Libya gave birth to a bloody civil war. Foreign powers, with their eye on Libya’s oil reserves, fueled a proxy war here.
