In an unprecedented move to call for drastic changes in the Congress, 23 top leaders of the party including those from the Congress Working Committee (CWC) have written to Sonia Gandhi over state of affairs in the party. The CWC has called for a meeting on Monday and will be discussing organisational issues. As per sources, the letter will be at the centre of talks. The CWC meeting assumes significance as it is happening at a time when its top leaders are deeply divided over the manner in which the party is being run. While Rahul Gandhi has shown no interest in assuming the charge so far, his return is also being opposed vehemently by a section of Congress leaders. According to sources, the letter has stressed that the revival of the Congress is “a national imperative” and is intrinsic to the health of democracy. It points out how the party’s downfall comes at a time when the party “gravest political, social and economic challenges since Independence.”
