Nepal is facing its worst unrest in years as protests escalated despite the lifting of the social media ban, forcing Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli to resign. Gen Z-led protesters torched government buildings, including the parliament, Supreme Court, and Singha Durbar, while storming prisons to free nearly 900 inmates. Oli’s residence was burned, and Finance Minister Bishnu Prasad Paudel was chased through Kathmandu. At least 22 people have died and over 300 injured. The Nepal Army has taken control of Kathmandu’s international airport and warned of decisive action if unrest continues. Former PM Jhalanath Khanal’s wife died from burn injuries after protesters set their home on fire. Indian PM Narendra Modi expressed anguish over the violence, urging peace, while India issued travel advisories and helplines. The crisis underlines Nepal’s fragile politics as Oli’s exit leaves a vacuum amid growing instability.
