A new strategic mutual defence agreement has been signed between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia, stipulating that an attack on one nation will be considered an attack on both. Pakistan’s Defence Minister stated the country’s nuclear capabilities would be available to Saudi Arabia under this pact. “What we have, what our capabilities are, will be available under the spectrum,” the minister said. This development holds significant ramifications for West Asia, given Saudi Arabia is a signatory to the Non-Proliferation Treaty. The pact could provide Saudi Arabia a nuclear deterrent, altering the regional power balance, which includes Israel’s non-stated nuclear capabilities. The agreement is also viewed in the context of historical Saudi financial support for Pakistan’s nuclear program and Pakistan’s ambition to be a military leader in the Islamic world.
