India is set to sign a mega deal for 97 Tejas Mark 1A fighter jets with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), valued at 66,500 crore rupees. The contract is expected to be inked today, a day before the Indian Air Force (IAF) retires its last two MiG-21 squadrons on September 26th. This procurement, approved by the Prime Minister-led Cabinet Committee on Security on August 19th, aims to bolster the IAF’s fleet as its squadron strength is set to drop to 29. The indigenously developed Tejas fighters will replace the ageing MiGs. A speaker noted the urgency, stating, “the Indian Air Force is an urgent requirement of Swadeshi Tejas Mark 1A fighter and today this deal will be signed.” This deal is in addition to a February 2021 contract for 83 Tejas MK 1A aircraft.
