This special report focuses on the ban of ‘Coldrif’ cough syrup in West Bengal, which follows a similar prohibition in Madhya Pradesh after the deaths of multiple children. The West Bengal government’s order is cited as a ‘precautionary measure’ to prevent any loss of life. The Bengal Chemists and Druggists Association (BCDA) stated, ‘The batch linked to the Madhya Pradesh incident has not entered West Bengal, but as a precautionary measure, we have informed all sellers to stop its sale’. The deaths in Madhya Pradesh were linked to the presence of diethylene glycol, a toxic industrial chemical, found in the syrup manufactured by Sresan Pharmaceuticals. The BCDA has directed all chemists to halt the sale and purchase of the syrup, although they clarified that the specific contaminated batch had not reached the state.
