NPCI has introduced biometric authentication for UPI payments, marking a major shift in India’s digital payment landscape. Launched at the Global Fintech Fest 2025 in Mumbai. This new feature allows users to authorize UPI payments using fingerprints or face recognition instead of a PIN.
Now, users can set or reset their UPI PIN and even withdraw cash from ATMs via biometric verification, ensuring faster, more secure, and user-friendly experiences. The new system performs authentication on-device, giving customers full control to opt in and choose their preferred method.
NPCI says every transaction will undergo independent cryptographic verification by the issuing bank, keeping it highly secure while simplifying payments for all — especially senior citizens and first-time digital users. With Aadhaar-based face authentication enabling PIN setup even without debit cards or OTP hassles, this step could redefine UPI onboarding in India.
