Delhi-NCR is choking to death while the government pretends a slight dip in AQI is victory enough to lift GRAP-3 restrictions; in reality the air remains just as toxic and deadly. Even the government’s own outdated seven year old monitoring system is being called useless by agencies, the Supreme Court has washed its hands saying it has no magic wand, and voices from Kiran Bedi to ordinary citizens are screaming for action that never comes. This is no longer just a Delhi problem, Mumbai, the Northeast, and 60 percent of India’s 749 districts are breathing poison, yet the Environment Minister is missing from the scene, busy elsewhere while the world’s fourth-largest economy forces its people into slow suffocation.
The Supreme Court has turned Samay Raina and his comedian friends into mandatory charity performers, ordering them to organise at least two fund-raising events every month for the disability treatment corpus. At the same time the court is pushing hard for a regulatory body to police online content, which smells a lot like the state wanting a tighter leash on jokes and memes. It’s a strange mix, creative punishment on one hand, a quiet threat to free speech on the other.
The Enforcement Directorate swooped into Bengaluru and arrested WinZO Games directors Saumya Singh Rathore and Paavan Nanda in a massive online betting probe. They’ve already been sent to ED custody and will be back in court today for the full remand battle. This is another reminder that India’s booming fantasy-gaming and betting empire is running straight into the arms of money laundering laws.
