India’s aviation sector faced chaos as IndiGo’s operational meltdown entered its fifth day, forcing the government to impose nationwide fare caps and order speedy passenger refunds. With over 400 IndiGo flights cancelled on December 6 alone, airfares on busy routes like Delhi–Mumbai and Delhi–Lucknow skyrocketed, prompting passengers to turn to trains. The Ministry of Civil Aviation capped ticket prices based on distance slabs and warned airlines against overcharging. Meanwhile, travel platforms showed Delhi–Mumbai fares ranging from ₹17,000 to ₹20,000 and Delhi–Lucknow tickets touching ₹30,000. Railway authorities added extra coaches to manage the surge as IndiGo cited a sudden pilot shortage and planning failures.
