US President Donald Trump has announced a major trade deal with India, saying the United States will cut tariffs on Indian goods from 50% to 18% in return for India agreeing to stop buying oil from Russia. Trump claimed that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has agreed to replace Russian crude with oil from the United States and Venezuela, aiming to pressure Russia amid the ongoing war in Ukraine. However, while PM Modi welcomed the tariff reduction on social media, India has not officially confirmed any decision to halt Russian oil purchases, and the government continues to stress its energy security priorities.
