A major political row has erupted in Maharashtra over comparisons between Tipu Sultan and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis slammed the Congress for drawing parallels, stating, ‘Shivaji established Swaraj, Tipu killed thousands’ and demanding an apology for the comparison. Fadnavis asserted that the two are not equals and such comparisons will not be tolerated. In response, AIMIM President Asaduddin Owaisi defended Tipu Sultan during a party event in Hyderabad, claiming Tipu was a martyr who fought the British bravely. Owaisi took a sharp dig at Hindutva icon VD Savarkar, stating, ‘Tipu did not write six love letters to the British like your Veer’ and alleging that Savarkar begged for forgiveness while Tipu died with a sword in his hand. The controversy follows a dispute over a Tipu Sultan portrait in the Malegaon Deputy Mayor’s office, which has drawn protests from the BJP and Shiv Sena.
