A widening rift between the Congress and the ruling DMK in Tamil Nadu has led the former to explore alternative alliances ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections. Following Chief Minister M.K. Stalin’s firm refusal to share power, Congress leaders are reportedly considering a tie-up with actor-turned-politician Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). Congress functionary Palani Kumar suggested that an alliance with TVK could secure 70 seats and potentially oust the DMK from power. Meanwhile, Congress MP Manickam Tagore expressed frustration over delayed seat-sharing talks, demanding respect for the party’s role in the alliance. While the DMK high command, represented by Kanimozhi, has held direct talks with Rahul Gandhi, the state unit of the Congress remains restless. The AIADMK has mocked the situation, questioning the stability of the ‘ideological alliance’ between the DMK and Congress. As the February 22 deadline for committee formation approaches, the Congress is also looking at options in Puducherry and Kerala to strengthen its southern presence.
