Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh has outlined India’s ambitious plans for the procurement and local manufacturing of 114 Rafale fighter aircraft. Speaking on the strategic partnership, Singh stated, ‘Our intent is to take it to as close to 50+ as possible, and we are confident that we can negotiate that.’ This landmark deal marks the first time Rafale jets will be manufactured outside France, aligning with the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative. The project will be executed through a government-to-government agreement to ensure full transparency and the integration of Indian weapons systems. Additionally, the partnership includes a joint venture between Bharat Electronics Limited and Safran to manufacture Hammer missiles in India, and the inauguration of an H-125 helicopter assembly line in Karnataka. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and French Minister Catherine Vautrin are set to co-chair the 6th India-France Annual Defence Dialogue in Bengaluru to further expand industrial collaboration and renew a 10-year defence cooperation agreement.
