Amid rising tensions in the West Asia conflict, the government of India has taken major steps to ensure uninterrupted supply of domestic cooking gas. The Centre has invoked the Essential Commodities Act to control the distribution of LPG across the country.
The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has directed refineries and petrochemical plants to increase LPG production by diverting hydrocarbon streams such as propane and butane into the LPG supply pool.
The gas will be distributed through state-run oil marketing companies including Indian Oil Corporation, Bharat Petroleum Corporation and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation.
To prevent hoarding, the government has introduced a 25-day gap between LPG cylinder bookings. Household LPG supply has been prioritised, while imported LPG will be reserved for essential sectors such as hospitals.
Meanwhile, shortages are being reported in cities like Bengaluru where hotels say they only have limited cooking gas left. In some areas, LPG cylinder prices have reportedly crossed ₹3000.
