Tensions are rising in West Asia after Mojtaba Khamenei, the leader of Iran, said the Strait of Hormuz must remain closed.
Reports say three oil tankers have been attacked in the region, including one belonging to the United States. Around 28 Indian vessels are currently in the nearby waters, raising concerns about their safe passage.
Some ships are located in the Persian Gulf, while others are in the Gulf of Oman on the eastern side of the strait.
India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar spoke with Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi to discuss the safety of Indian ships passing through the region. The Ministry of External Affairs confirmed the conversation.
Two tankers, MT Pushpak and MT Parimal, have already crossed the Strait of Hormuz safely. India is also working with partner countries to ensure secure passage for ships, possibly with escorted routes.
Meanwhile, Dubai in the United Arab Emirates has reportedly been hit by missiles amid the escalating regional tensions.
