United States President Donald Trump’s statements on the ongoing conflict with Iran continue to send mixed signals. Trump stated that the US makes money when oil prices rise, while simultaneously warning Iran against keeping the Strait of Hormuz closed, which he claims is causing oil price increases. He reiterated that stopping Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons remains his primary objective. This follows his earlier suggestion that the military campaign in Iran could end very soon, which had temporarily eased fears of disruption in the Strait of Hormuz and caused oil prices to drop. Trump claimed the US has eliminated Iran’s Navy, military capabilities, and leadership twice, stating that a new group is emerging. He suggested most observers believe the conflict has already been won, adding that the US does not want to allow Iran to regrow and ideally wants leadership that can rebuild the country.
