With the Strait of Hormuz closed and global oil prices soaring, reports suggest the United States’ third warship is moving towards the Strait of Hormuz to deploy around 2,200 marines for a potential operation involving Iran’s Karg Island. The USS Tripoli, an amphibious assault ship capable of transporting and supporting ground troops on hostile shores, has been deployed to the Middle East. According to a report by the Wall Street Journal, additional marines from the Okinawa-based 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit would be ferried by the Tripoli. Karg Island is located in the Persian Gulf, roughly 25 kilometers off Iran’s coast, and serves as Iran’s primary oil export hub, handling nearly 90% of its crude shipments. Targeting of Kharg Island can impact Iran’s revenue streams, limiting its ability to sustain prolonged military operations, though the island is within range of Iranian missile and drone systems, placing deployed troops in a highly exposed environment.
