Lebanon’s foreign ministry has declared the Iranian envoy persona non grata and ordered them to leave the country by Sunday. The Lebanese government has accused Iran’s elite revolutionary guard of operating in Lebanon alongside Hezbollah and passing on critical information. The decision comes amid ongoing conflict, with the country facing a humanitarian crisis as approximately one million people have been displaced from their homes in south Lebanon and south suburbs of Beirut. The Lebanese government had earlier requested Iranian authorities to curb attacks by Hezbollah, as the country struggles through difficult times. The move is reported to have come after pressure from France and the United States. Iran’s embassy will continue to have a chargé d’affaires to head its diplomatic mission, according to the Lebanese government.
