Pakistan is facing an imminent energy crisis, with blackouts expected within the next 10 days as liquefied natural gas (LNG) supplies from Qatar have halted. Almost 99 per cent of Pakistan’s LNG imports came from Qatar last year, with the last cargoes from Ras Laffan arriving on the second and third days of the Iran war. Both of the country’s LNG import terminals have reduced operations to one-sixth of normal levels and will have stopped dispatching gas completely by the end of this month, according to sources familiar with the situation. The government has implemented emergency measures including work-from-home policies, rationing of fuel and gas supply to essential services, and the Pakistan Super League cricket matches are now being held behind closed doors to conserve fuel. The crisis unfolds amid the ongoing West Asia conflict, which has disrupted regional energy supplies.
