Philippines President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has declared a state of national energy emergency in response to the Middle East conflict, citing an imminent danger to the country’s energy supply. Footage shows long queues at petrol stations across Manila with no fuel available, while angry protesters holding banners reading ‘bring down gasoline prices’ took to the streets. The West Asia war has triggered a global energy crisis affecting net energy importers across Southeast Asia. Around 20 percent of global energy supply comes from the Strait of Hormuz, with disruptions already impacting facilities like Qatar’s Ras Laffan gas facility, which supplies 17 percent of India’s gas imports. Many tankers remain stranded in the Strait of Hormuz and the Persian Gulf. Analysts warn that even if the war ends today, the impact of supply disruptions could last six months to one year, adding pressure to the global economy and affecting food prices, factory production, and exports.
