Fuel panic is sweeping across Indian cities as long queues form at petrol pumps from Hyderabad, Nagpur, Prayagraj to Lucknow, triggered by social media rumours and actual shortages. In Maharashtra’s Jalna, panic buying led authorities to impose strict limits: 200 rupees for two-wheelers, 2000 rupees for cars, and a complete ban on fuel in containers. Officials insist there is no shortage of petrol and diesel, but acknowledge concerns over LPG supply. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath warned against rumour mongering, urging people to buy fuel only when necessary. Gujarat Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghvi attributed the crisis to the ongoing West Asia war, stating that while there is a shortage, the government is managing supplies through balancing measures. He noted that some industries in Surat shut down for four to six days due to gas shortages. The opposition criticised the central government for poor communication and delayed response, with Congress spokesperson Pooja Tripathi highlighting the lack of parliamentary discussion and confusion over strategic reserves. The episode underscores how quickly fear and misinformation can disrupt daily life, even as petrol and diesel supplies remain stable.
