India’s Parliament has passed the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Bill, 2026, a move that has triggered widespread protests from the LGBTQ+ community and opposition parties. While the government presents the bill as a landmark step toward legal recognition and protection, activists argue that it fundamentally undermines the right to self-identification and dignity.

Hundreds of transgender persons gathered at Jantar Mantar in the national capital, demanding a complete rollback of the legislation. The protesters claim that the new law forces them to undergo a screening process by a district committee to prove their identity, which they describe as a violation of the NALSA judgment of the Supreme Court.

The Lallantop team reached the protest site to understand the specific grievances of the community. Watch the report to know more.
