An India Today report details what is being called the United States’ most complex rescue mission to extract a downed F-15E pilot from hostile Iranian territory. The operation involved a 30-hour manhunt where the CIA reportedly used a deception campaign, including a ‘pilot spotted’ theory and decoy beacons, to distract Iranian forces. According to the transcript, the rescue saw the mobilization of hundreds of special forces, dozens of aircraft, and heavy air cover provided by A-10 Warthogs to prevent IRGC troops from reaching the pilot first. The pilot, a colonel, reportedly used survival tactics by hiding on an elevated ridge and was allegedly assisted by locals in an anti-regime region. The mission faced further complications when two C-130 exfiltration planes became disabled at an Iranian base and were subsequently destroyed by US forces to prevent recovery. The report also highlights concerns regarding the rapid depletion of the US missile arsenal, noting that over 1,000 JASSM-ER cruise missiles have been fired in just four weeks of the conflict.
