In a significant political shift ahead of the West Bengal Assembly elections, Asaduddin Owaisi’s AIMIM has terminated its alliance with the Aam Janata Unnayan Party, led by suspended Trinamool Congress MLA Humayun Kabir. The decision follows the release of a sting video by the TMC, in which Kabir allegedly discusses links with senior BJP leaders. AIMIM stated it will now contest the elections independently, asserting it cannot associate with statements that question the integrity of Muslims. Humayun Kabir has dismissed the video as a conspiracy and a forgery, stating he will challenge it in the High Court. Union Home Minister Amit Shah also defended Kabir, alleging the video is a fabrication by the TMC and denying any links between the BJP and Kabir. The fallout is expected to impact the Muslim vote bank, which constitutes approximately 27% of Bengal’s population and influences over 100 seats. Historically a stronghold for the TMC, the split in the Owaisi-Kabir alliance may reduce the threat of a divided minority vote for Mamata Banerjee.
