In a significant development ahead of the West Bengal Elections, Election Commission sources reveal that nearly 90.82 lakh names have been removed from West Bengal’s voter list following the SIR process. Out of 60 lakh individuals under adjudication, a staggering 27.16 lakh have been officially deleted.

In the two districts with robust Matua populations, North 24-Parganas and Nadia, 2,65,077 and 2,08,026 voters, respectively, have been deleted. Administrative sources said a substantial concentration is in the Ranaghat subdivision along the India-Bangladesh border.

The Lallantop team reached Thakurnagar (Gaighata Assembly, Bangaon Lok Sabha) to understand the ground reality of this massive voter deletion and the fear of losing citizenship. We also tracked the history of the Matua community and their profound influence on West Bengal’s political landscape. Watch the Report to know more.
