Tarikh is a daily program in which we present you with incidents and stories of noteworthy persons of Indian History in Hindi. In this edition of Tarikh, Nikhil talks about the history of Heart transplant surgery in India. In India, Dr P K Sen is credited with having done the first heart transplant in the country way back in 1968 but the patient could not survive on the transplanted heart. The Transplantation of Human Organs Bill was passed by the Parliament in May 1994, allowing the transplantation of organs from brain-dead patients. On August 3, 1994, Dr P Venugopal, led a team of doctors in carrying out the first successful heart transplant in the country. The first heart transplant surgery in a private hospital was performed on September 22, 1995 by doctor Dr. KM Cherian in which a brahman Hindu women’s heart was transplanted on to a Muslim women.
