Forced on the back foot by the rebellion by a majority of its MLAs, the Shiv Sena group under Uddhav Thackeray is considering announcing its support to BJP’s presidential candidate, Draupadi Murmu, to prevent another split in the party, now among its Lok Sabha members.
On Monday, during a meeting called by Thackeray to ascertain the views of the MPs in both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, an overwhelming number of them told him that they felt that the party should support Murmu, party insiders said. Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut essentially confirmed the stand of the party on presidential elections.
While the former Maharashtra chief minister and some of his close aides are not keen to support Murmu’s candidature, the Sena leadership is veering towards a view that they need to prevent another rebellion, party sources said.
