Preliminary results on Monday gave German chancellor Angela Merkel’s CDU 17.6 per cent, its lowest ever result in Berlin. The rightwing AfD captured 14.2 per cent, falling short of its ambitious 20 per cent target, but in line with pre-election forecasts.
