In this edition of Tarikh, Nikhil talks about Srinivas Ramanujan. (22 December 1887 – 26 April 1920). Having no formal training in pure mathematics, Ramanujan made substantial contributions to mathematical analysis, number theory, infinite series, and continued fractions, including solutions to mathematical problems that were considered unsolvable. In 1913 he began a postal correspondence with the English mathematician G. H. Hardy at the University of Cambridge, England. Hardy arranged for his travel to London and in a short duration of 7 years Ramanujan published some great works of Mathematics that were later used in quantum mechanics and string theory.
