In this edition of Tarikh, Divyanshi Talks about Charles Ponzi, a name synonymous with one of the most notorious financial schemes in history. Charles Ponzi was an Italian-born swindler who became infamous for his fraudulent investment scheme, which is now known as the Ponzi scheme. In the early 1920s, Ponzi promised investors enormous returns by buying international reply coupons at discounted rates and then redeeming them in the United States at face value. However, he was not actually investing the money as promised and instead used new investors’ funds to pay earlier investors, thus creating a scam. Ponzi became incredibly wealthy from his scheme but was eventually caught and sentenced to prison. His name has since become synonymous with financial fraud and schemes that promise high returns with little risk.
