Tarikh is a daily Hindi programme in which we present you with incidents and stories of noteworthy persons and Incidents. In this edition of Tarikh, Nikhil talks about The Maersk Alabama hijacking, a maritime piracy incident that occurred on April 8, 2009, when the US-flagged container ship Maersk Alabama was hijacked by Somali pirates in the Indian Ocean. The ship was carrying relief supplies to Mombasa, Kenya, and was the first American cargo ship to be hijacked in over 200 years.
The pirates, armed with AK-47s and rocket-propelled grenades, boarded the ship and took the crew hostage. The crew was able to lock themselves in a secure room, but the pirates threatened to kill them if they did not surrender. The captain, Richard Phillips, then offered himself as a hostage in exchange for the safety of his crew.
The US Navy responded by sending several warships to the area, including the guided-missile destroyer USS Bainbridge. After a tense standoff, the pirates agreed to exchange Captain Phillips for a lifeboat. However, the US Navy SEALs, who had been observing the situation, decided to intervene and took out the pirates in a daring nighttime operation.
Captain Phillips was rescued unharmed, and the remaining pirates were taken into custody. The incident was widely covered by the media and was later the subject of the movie “Captain Phillips” starring Tom Hanks. The hijacking highlighted the problem of piracy in the region and led to increased international efforts to combat it.
