Even as the intermediate jet trainer for the IAF by HAL – HJT-36 Sitara remains under development for more than 25 years, another IJT (HJT-16 Kiran) of the IAF crashed on 1 June 2023 near Chamrajnagar, Karnataka. Both pilots ejected safely.

Stage 2 – Intermediate Jet Trainers like HJT -16 Kiran

The IAF/IN are facing acute shortage of intermediate jet trainers (like the one involved in crash). Our IJT’s are of 1970’s vintage. HAL has not been able to deliver on its Sitara promise.
