In this episode of Tarikh, Nikhil narrates the remarkable story of a french soldier Albert Severin Roche. Roche hailed from a humble farming family. Despite being initially rejected by the French Army due to his physical stature, Roche’s determination led him to join the military and prove his worth.
Roche served in various battalions and gained a reputation for his bravery and strategic skills. He captured numerous enemy soldiers and successfully completed several missions throughout the war. His notable acts of valor included single-handedly neutralizing a German blockhouse by throwing grenades down the stove chimney and using the weapons of fallen comrades to defend his position in a trench.
Roche was wounded nine times and captured 1,180 prisoners during his service. Despite his exceptional accomplishments, he remained a second-class soldier by the end of the war. However, during a public ceremony in Strasbourg, General Ferdinand Foch proclaimed Roche as “the first soldier of France,” acknowledging his extraordinary contributions.
After the war, Roche returned to civilian life, working as a municipal laborer and later becoming a firefighter. Tragically, he passed away in a car accident in April 1939 at the age of 44.
