In this episode Tarikh Nikhil talks about The Battle of Rezang La is a remarkable episode in the history of the Indian military, where Major Shaitan Singh and his valiant troops displayed unwavering courage and determination during the 1962 Sino-Indian War.
Located in the harsh terrain of the Chushul sector in Ladakh, Rezang La was a strategically significant pass defended by a small contingent of Indian soldiers from the 13th Kumaon Regiment. Major Shaitan Singh led this unit, and they were tasked with holding this vital position against overwhelming Chinese forces.
On November 18, 1962, the Chinese launched a massive assault on Rezang La. Major Shaitan Singh and his men, vastly outnumbered, fought fiercely, refusing to give in to the enemy’s advance. Despite being heavily outnumbered and facing severe cold, hunger, and ammunition shortages, they held their ground tenaciously. Shaitan Singh’s leadership and personal valor inspired his troops to fight to the last man.
In the end, all 124 soldiers of the Kumaon Regiment were martyred, including Major Shaitan Singh, who displayed remarkable bravery and leadership throughout the battle. Their sacrifice at Rezang La serves as a symbol of the indomitable spirit and unwavering dedication of Indian soldiers in the face of adversity, and they are remembered as heroes who defended their post with unmatched valor.
