In this edition of Tarikh, Divyanshi narrates the Battle of Boyra between Indian and Pakistan Air Force. The aerial interception battle was fought during the Battle of Garibpur in East Pakistan(now Bangladesh) on 22 November 1971. Before the aerial battle, Indian Army had already destroyed Pakistan tanks and captured the area around Garibpur. Pakistan Army retaliated but couldn’t succeed and hence Pakistani Air Force jets intruded to help Pakistani Army in land battle. At that time, Pakistani Army was engaged in combat against the Mukti Bahini (Bengali Guerrilla fighters) and a Battalion size detachment of the Indian Army as part of the Bangladesh Liberation War. The Pakistan Air Force (PAF) aircrafts ended up crossing the Indian Border and Indian Airforce started following them in retaliation. Four Folland Gnat aircraft moved to Dum Dum (Kolkata Airport) from Kalaikunda, near Kharagpur to intercept the Pakistan Air Force aircraft.
