A group of Meitei women on Thursday staged a protest in front of the Raj Bhavan in Manipur capital Imphal, and demanded withdrawal of central security forces from the state.The women alleged that the forces are no longer able to protect civilians in the state. They displayed banners and raised slogans about their concern.
Security was beefed up in view of the protest.Meanwhile, situation in the Northeastern state remains grim.At least three BSF personnel sustained bullet injuries after gunmen fired at them in Manipur’s Thoubal district, police said on Thursday.The incident occurred late Wednesday night when the gunmen from a mob which “attempted to breach the Thoubal police headquarters” fired at the security personnel, a police statement said.The mob, first, targeted the 3rd Indian Reserve Battalion at Khangabok in Thoubal district and security forces repelled them using minimum force.Ethnic clashes between the Meitei and Kuki communities has kept Manipur on the boil since May last year.
