Pakistan votes today to elect new governments in the Centre and States. Voting concluded for a new government in a controversial election amid authorities suspending mobile calls and data. The election comes almost two years after the previous prime minister, cricketer-turned-politician Imran Khan, was ousted in a no-confidence vote. Imran is now in Jail on corruption and sedition charges. His main opponent in the 2018 election, Nawaz Sharif, has gained the support of the military establishment. Bilawal Bhutto Zardari from the Pakistan People’s Party has also shown some fight.
Three-time PM Nawaz Sharif was on the ballot in what many analysts say is Pakistan’s least credible election yet. Khan, jailed on corruption charges last year, is barred from standing and his party has been barred from using its election symbol Bat.
