Tarikh Episode 681
In this episode Nikhil talks about The Anglo-Zanzibar War, and Zanzibar slave trade. The origins of the war can be traced back to a power struggle following the death of Sultan Hamad bin Thuwaini on August 25, 1896. Hamad’s successor, Sultan Khalid bin Barghash, took the throne without the approval of the British, who favored another candidate. This defiance prompted the British consul to demand Khalid’s resignation.
However, Khalid refused to step down, and tensions escalated as he fortified his palace with artillery and soldiers. In response, the British dispatched warships to the harbor, including the HMS Thrush and the HMS St. George, armed with superior firepower.
On the morning of August 27, 1896, the British issued an ultimatum to Khalid, demanding his surrender by 9:00 a.m. local time. When Khalid ignored the ultimatum, the British ships opened fire on the Sultan’s palace, swiftly overwhelming its defenses. The bombardment was devastating, reducing much of the palace and its defenses to rubble within minutes.
Realizing the futility of resistance, Sultan Khalid fled the palace, seeking refuge in the German consulate. With the Sultan’s departure, the British declared victory, effectively ending the conflict in less than an hour.
