In this episode of Tarikh, Nikhil talks about Sheikh Dean Mohamed, a trailblazing Indian immigrant to Britain in the late 1700s, who left an indelible mark on Western society. Though not the actual inventor of shampoo, he popularised the Indian practice of therapeutic hair and body massage using herb-infused oils.
Born in 1759 in British India, Mohamed had an illustrious career as a soldier, surgeon, and entrepreneur after travelling to Europe. In 1814, Mohamed opened luxurious “Mahomed’s Baths” in the affluent Brighton neighborhood of London. His upscale bathhouses offered a novel experience – clients received invigorating massage treatments with specially prepared coconut oil hair products and herbal fragrances.
This Indian hair cleansing ritual, initially viewed as exotic, quickly became a coveted indulgence among Britain’s elite class. The term “shampoo” derived from the Hindi word “champo” came into widespread use because of Mohamed’s pioneering businesses.
Beyond promoting shampoo baths, he is also credited with opening one of Britain’s first Indian restaurants, playing a key role in introducing authentic Indian cuisine to English society. Mohamed left a lasting legacy bridging Indian and British cultures through his entrepreneurial spirit.
