A new notification from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) states that all helmets in India must bear the ISI mark from June 1, 2021, onwards. The subject of standardisation of helmets has been a bone of contention between governing bodies, manufacturers and motorcycling enthusiasts since the government first announced compulsory compliance to BIS standards way back in 2018. At the time, the government, under pressure from standardised helmet manufacturers to curb the manufacture and import of sub-standard helmets issued a notification saying that helmet manufacturers would be required to comply with ISI standards.
