In this episode, Saurabh Dwivedi talks about the Guantanamo Bay detention camp, which was established in the aftermath of the 9/11 terrorist attacks on America. Guantanamo Bay is based in Cuba. It is a US naval base, taken on lease in 1903. The US pays about three lac rupees annually to the Cuban Government. After the Communist revolution in Cuba, Fidel Castro asked America to leave their land. America didn’t agree to it.
After the 9/11 attack, The US launched the war on terror in Afghanistan. A number of conspirators were booked and interrogated by the US authorities. As the arrest rose, Investigators needed a secure and unique place to question the most notorious terrorists. That place was Guantanamo Bay. In the later part, this detention camp was heavily criticized for inhuman tortures and lack of legal rights of prisoners.
Earlier US presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama had tried to empty the cells, but they couldn’t. Donald Trump was in the favor of revival. He too couldn’t. Now, Joe Biden is trying to finally shut down the detention camp. A 73-year old Pakistani Prisoner is among the three, whose release notice has been signed. Yet, there are many more obstacles for the final shut down? Can Joe Biden shut down Guantanamo Bay?
