For example, the “Dhuku” tradition in the tribal regions of Jharkhand is an alternative to marriage, chosen by families who cannot afford the expensive wedding feasts that their customs demand. As he explores further, we discuss how various tribes, like the Toda in Tamil Nadu and Bhils in Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh, have their own distinctive customs. Some tribes follow practices like polyandry, symbolic child marriages, or even exchange marriages, each deeply rooted in their community’s history and socio-economic conditions. Additionally, in the Khasi community of Meghalaya, the matrilineal system places women at the center of inheritance and family structure—a unique practice that sets them apart.
Kuldeep also touches on the complex legal landscape in India concerning the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), a proposed law aiming to standardize marriage, divorce, and inheritance rights across communities. However, the UCC poses challenges in accommodating the diverse cultural practices of India’s 700+ tribal groups. Given these complexities, the government faces the difficult task of balancing legal equality with preserving cultural identities, especially with provisions under Articles 371A and 371G safeguarding certain tribal customs.
