A 20-year-old student from Akhir Mohan University in Odisha has died by self-immolation after her repeated complaints of sexual harassment against a professor were allegedly ignored by the college administration. The student had filed her first complaint on June 20th, followed by two more reminders, alleging that the Head of Department, Sameer Sahu, was harassing her and seeking sexual favors. Following inaction, she took the extreme step on July 12th and succumbed to her injuries two days later. Her father has called it a murder, stating, “They drove my daughter to her death, they should be charged with murder.” The incident has triggered widespread protests across Odisha, with political parties like the BJD and Congress calling for bandhs.
