The Supreme Court has stayed the Bombay High Court’s acquittal of 12 accused in the 2006 Mumbai train blasts case, calling such a move the ‘rarest of rare’. CJI BR Gavai made the remark during a hearing on Maharashtra’s plea challenging the acquittal, following the High Court’s overturning of a 2009 trial court verdict that sentenced five to death and seven to life imprisonment. The Court agreed to hear the matter, despite procedural issues, after urgent requests from the Maharashtra ATS and Solicitor General Tushar Mehta.
