India’s space agency, ISRO, is set to launch the NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar (NISAR) satellite this evening from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota. This mission is a collaboration with NASA. Developed over a decade at a cost of $1.5 billion, the satellite is one of the biggest Indo-US satellite missions. It has two major payloads: “One is a S-band Synthetic Aperture Radar, which is totally developed by ISRO… And there’s a L-band SAR payload developed by JPL America.” The satellite will be launched using ISRO’s GSLV rocket. NISAR will provide high-resolution, all-weather imaging of Earth, scanning the entire globe every 12 days to observe changes in land, ice surfaces, and ecosystems. The mission’s objectives include studying land deformation, tracking glacial melt, and aiding in disaster management by monitoring seismic shifts and other natural hazards.
