Rescue and evacuation operations are underway on a ‘war footing’ in Uttarkashi’s Dharali and Harsil regions following devastating flash floods. Approximately 250 individuals, including tourists and locals, are reported missing, while over 700 have been evacuated by Army and Air Force choppers. Chinook helicopters are being used to ferry heavy machinery, generators, and essential supplies to stranded people. A primary focus is on restoring connectivity to the worst-hit areas. The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) is constructing a 90-feet triple single belly bridge to facilitate the movement of relief material and personnel. While the metal structure is in place for emergency pedestrian crossing, it is not yet ready for vehicular traffic. The bridge is critical for moving heavy equipment required to clear the widespread mudslides and continue search efforts.
