The Supreme Court of India has strongly criticised local authorities for their inaction regarding the implementation of rules concerning stray dogs. The Apex Court observed that despite rules being framed, no action is being taken, leading to suffering. The court stated, “You frame rules, rules are framed, no action is being done.” This development comes during a crucial hearing on the stray dog issue. The court has reserved its order on pleas seeking interim relief and a stay on its previous directive, which included the creation of 5000 shelters. The Supreme Court has warned against random remarks on its judgment and told those criticising the stray dog issue to file an affidavit. A three-judge bench is currently examining whether a stay on the earlier directions is required, acknowledging a grey area for municipal authorities.
