India has alerted Pakistan about possible downstream flooding in the Tawi and Sutlej rivers. The communication was made on “humanitarian grounds” by the Indian High Commission in Islamabad to the Pakistani foreign ministry, bypassing the Indus Waters Treaty Commission. This measure was taken as the Indus Waters Treaty remains in abeyance following the Pehlgam terror attack. According to Pakistani media, Islamabad has acknowledged the information and issued warnings for its people to evacuate to safer areas. The alert comes as Pakistan grapples with severe floods that have resulted in over 780 deaths. Government sources in India have confirmed that the communication was made based on India’s assessment of the incoming flood situation. The Pakistani disaster management authority has issued a warning effective until the 30th of August.
