The Collegium system, where judges appoint judges without government interference, is under sharp debate again. In 2021, three women were elevated to the Supreme Court, but today only Justice BV Nagarathna remains, making the ratio 31:1. The controversy erupted when the Collegium recommended Justice Vipul Pancholi, who is far down in seniority, ignoring three senior women judges. Justice Nagarathna dissented, but her reasons were not made public, prompting criticism from senior lawyers and ex-judges like Indira Jaising and Justice Abhay Oka. Despite the uproar, the government cleared Pancholi’s appointment on August 27, 2025.
