In the aftermath of a tragic stampede, the Tamil Nadu government has stated it will not permit political gatherings until new Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) are in place. The Madras High Court recorded the submission that “the Tamil Nadu police will not be granting any permission for any more political gatherings.” The court also issued directives for future events, stipulating they must not be held near national or state highways and must have basic facilities like drinking water, medical aid, and clear exit routes. This decision impacts all political parties. Meanwhile, the Madurai bench of the Madras High Court is set to hear several related Public Interest Litigations, including a plea to transfer the investigation into the ‘Karu tragedy’ to the CBI and an anticipatory bail hearing for two TVK leaders, CT Nirmal Kumar and N Anand.
